The Bahamas

The main settlement on Rum Cay Island is Port Nelson, a small friendly town, where you'll find Kay's Bar, which periodically hosts parties on weekends, and the Ocean View Restaurant. Both are local hangouts before, during, and after sundown. Nearly everybody lives in Port Nelson.

Settlements such as Port Boyd, Black Rock and Gin Hill are now deserted and overgrown.

The bars and boats communicate by VHF. Hike, bike or rent a jeep to get to the other (
eastern) side of the island (about 8 kilometers/5 miles away) to the stunning, deserted beach there. Along the way, up and down gentle rises, you'll pass old farms and salt ponds, and see wild cows in the distance.
